Shin-Etsu Silicones of America Inc. teamed with injection molding makers to run overmolding demonstrations at NPE 2015, using the Akron, Ohio-based company's KE-2090 Select-Hesive LMS (liquid injection molding system).
The self-bonding material is designed to provide primer-less adhesion to a variety of thermoplastics.
Engel North America used LIMS to mold double-ended wrenches using two e-mac presses, transferring the parts by a linear robot. The carbon-fiber reinforced polycarbonate wrenches were overmolded with the Shin-Etsu liquid silicone between the two ends, giving a better grip. Roembke Manufacturing Inc. produced the four-drop, valve-gated cold deck mold.
Also at NPE, Milacron LLC molded a two-shot diaphragm disk, for medical or automotive, on an all-electric Roboshot press, again using a Roembke mold. A PC substrate was then overmolded with KE-2090 LIMS, using Milacron's Mold-Masters' E-Multi auxiliary injection unit modified for silicone rubber.
