Maag Automatik has developed a new process for underwater pelletizing of engineering polymers, called Optimized Temperature Pelletizing.
OTP opens up a way to pelletize thermoplastics in Maag's Sphero underwater pelletizing system.
In the presence of over-heated water, the pellets are cut and subjected to the first cooling step. In the transfer unit, the pellets are separated from overheated water and handed over to the second cooling unit. After that subsequent cooling, the pressure is released and the pellets get separated by the Centro dryer from the process water. Then the pellets are ready for further processing or packing.
The closed-loop process gives operating conditions without any emission to the air or contamination of the resin.
The OTP pellets meet high standards used in medical applications. The equipment also handles optical applications from polycarbonate.
Maag Automatik is part of Maag Pump Systems AG in Oberglatt, Switzerland. Its U.S. operation, Maag Automatic Inc., is in Charlottem NC.
