The new Series 725 co-extrusion crosshead design from Guill Tool & Engineering Co. Inc. is designed for tray cable applications.
It has an all-stainless-steel construction, and features Guill's patented Seal Right system of self-aligning tapered defector and body design.
Guill developed Series 725 in partnership with a customer, to convert a production line from a tandem line with two heats a distance apart, into a coextrusion line with a single head, to apply both layers of PVC in a single operation.
Also, there is a considerably shorter changeover time — and Guill officials quip than in this case, one head is better than two!
According to the company, less scrap is generated with a single-head setup, and it gives improved quality because of better adhesion between the layers since melt adheres to melt rather than to the extrudate. Also, the inner layer is not exposed to the environment, which can allow contaminates to get between the layers.
Guill is based in West Warwick, R.I.
