King Plastic Corp. has developed anti-microbial plastic sheet aimed at healthcare applications.
King Plastic says its MediGrade combines durability, designer colors and antimicrobial activity in one product for cabinets, case goods, clean rooms, nurses' stations, veterinary facilities and other structures where germs are unwanted.
“The anti-microbial additive is bonded at the molecular level at the very beginning of our proprietary K-Stran production process,” notes King Plastic national sales manager Michael Fabbri. “If heavy abrasion occurs during end use, the anti-microbial additive will never lose its efficacy, unlike anti-microbial coatings.”
King Plastic makes its high density polyethylene MediGrade sheet using a siloxane additive from Biosafe Systems LLC and claims the product can reduce the amount of certain product-damaging bacteria by 99 percent. The additive is exempt from registration under U.S. Environmental Protection Agency code 40 CFR 152.25(a) for bacteriostatic, fungistatic and algistatic properties. MediGrade sheet's effectiveness is verified by ISO and ASTM standards, according to King Plastics.
