Molded Devices Inc. has acquired product design and engineering capabilities in Pleasanton, Calif., and disposable and durable medical device production resources in South Glens Falls, N.Y.
Compass Product Design Inc. in northern California employs five and offers industrial design, product engineering, prototyping and production services.
MDI had contracted with Compass for services in recent years and now, for the first time, has those capabilities in-house, said Dave Schoell, MDI's vice president of sales.
Bates Industries LLC in New York's Saratoga County employs 76, occupies 21,000 square feet, operates four blow molding machines and two extrusion lines and outsources its injection molding needs. In addition, Bates provides assembly, packaging, sterilization and quality control services and utilizes good manufacturing practices.
MDI completed the transactions Dec. 31. No terms were disclosed.
Curt Anderson founded Compass in 1989 and remains with the company. The firm has worked with more than 200 clients on 500 programs in the medical device, laboratory equipment, consumer electronics and other markets. Operations will continue in Pleasanton.
The addition of Bates extends MDI's medical business and offers expanded capabilities for customers in fulfilling their requirements across the United States.
Privately held Riverside, Calif.-based MDI has other operations Tempe, Ariz.; Miamisburg, Ohio; Sellersville, Pa.; and Oshkosh, Wis. MDI says it has North America's largest custom dip molding operations using automatic and manual systems in processing coatings of plastisol suspensions and PVC in a range of colors and finishes.
The additions of Compass and Bates fit MDI's broader strategy to provide customers with complete product design, development, manufacturing and assembly solutions across the U.S.
MDI anticipates completing other acquisitions during 2016, Schoell said.
