Those Tar Heels sure know how to recycle their plastic bottles.
Unifi Inc. reports that more than 250,000 plastic bottles have been recycled though University of North Carolina events over an 18-month period.
Unifi manufactures Repreve brand fiber made from recycled bottles.
“Our collaboration with Repreve is a perfect representation of the university's commitment to sustainability,” said Bubba Cunningham, director of athletics at UNC, in a statement. “The goals of Unifi and Repreve's initiatives align seamlessly with ours as we work to continue increasing our green efforts across campus.”
UNC students at Jan. 30's men's basketball game verses Boston College in Chapel Hill, N.C., will receive T-shirts made from Repreve. Each shirt uses fiber made from 15 recycled bottles. Cheerleaders, dancers and even the Tar Heel mascot also will were Repreve shirts.
