Food packaging thermoformer Sabert Corp. said Feb. 8 it plans to acquire North Carolina's Kalman Packaging Inc., in a bid to get into the market for cupcakes and other bakery packaging.
Sabert, which has five packaging plants in the United States, Belgium and China, said Graham, N.C.-based Kalman makes thermoformed plastic hinged food containers for bakeries and supermarkets.
In a statement announcing the deal, Sayerville, N.J.-based Sabert said it has identified bakery goods as a growing segment and wants to develop a more complete packaging line.
“Sabert has never really done bakery specifically and we were really looking for a company that could bring that expertise to us,” said Jessica Burrell, marketing communications manager.
She said Kalman was a small company with a limited customer base, but it has technology in PET container design and hinged packaging that are attractive to Sabert.
“I believe that this relationship will help to accelerate new product development in this segment,” said Dan Kalmanides, owner and president of Kalman Packaging. “With the acquisition of Kalman, Sabert will be able to provide new innovation and versatile packages designed specifically for pies, cupcakes, muffins, and other bakery foods.”
