Cord-Sets Inc. of Minneapolis, a manufacturer of power supply cords, jumper cables, wire harnesses and injection molded plugs and connectors, selected Lava Shield-brand of guards to protect employees during purging of injection presses.
Purging the press pumps out molten resin, creating a potential safety hazard.
Buffalo, N.Y.-based Shuman Plastics Inc. created the Lava Shield in response to customers like Cord-Sets who were asking for a better way to handle the purges. Lava Shield is designed with a unique combination of specialty papers which absorb and then quickly dissipate heat quickly and will not hold or transfer heat. When the purge cools, the non-stick surface releases the purge, free from contamination, so they can be sold or recycled internally — this is what Cord-Sets now does with its PVC purges.
Gary Anderson, quality control and maintenance supervisor at Cord-Sets, was looking for ways to further improve safety when purging the company's 11 injection molding machines, which range in clamping force from 70-150 tons.
“During my research, I identified Lava-Shield Protective Purge Guards and tested a sample,” Anderson said. “I was impressed with the ease of use and the product's simple, customizable construction.”
Lava Shield can be easily folded, cut and shaped to fit special purging need. Shuman Plastics said it has up to 30 percent recycled content, and is made in the United States.
