Swedish retail giant Ikea is rolling out a new range of household products made from recycled materials, including plastic, early next year.
A door for kitchen units, the Kungsbacka, is made from a combination of recycled wood and plastic from PET bottles, while a desk pad, called the Skrutt, has been made from reprocessed waste plastic film sourced from Ikea stores in Italy and France.
The retailer is also launching the Odger chair, made from 70 percent recycled plastic and 30 percent renewable wood.
Anna Granath, an Ikea product developer who worked on the Kungsbacka door, said: “Our products are purchased by very many people, and by offering more sustainable alternatives, we actually have the opportunity to make a difference.
“Therefore, we started looking at how to replace the new material with recycled material in our kitchens.”
She said her team hoped the door and the other products would be “the first step on the journey to stop using oil-based plastics, and that people see waste as a resource and that they recycle more”.
