A joint-venture company has developed a water-based barrier coating that it says is a substitute for polyethylene coatings and allows for paper take-out food packaging to be composted.
The new coating, called FlexShield, can be applied to paperboard without compromising barrier performance, said Cascades Sonoco, a joint venture between Sonoco Products Co. and Cascades Inc..
The new coating can be used on take-out containers that also can substitute for expanded polystyrene take-out boxes, which are being banned in some locations, the company said.
