Thermoset molding compound specialist IDI Composites International Inc. invested about $1.5 million to build a center to consolidate its research and development activities.
Opened in July, the IDI composites technology center occupies about 7,000 square feet within IDI's 125,000-square-foot headquarters facility in Noblesville, Ind.
IDI spent about $1 million of the investment for new equipment, including a sheet molding compounder and additional compression molding presses up to 250 tons, said Jay Merrell, executive vice president.
The center encourages customers to share ideas during early stages of product innovation. IDI characterizes its process as “inquiry, ideas and innovation,” shortened to 3i.
IDI employs 110 and, in addition to Noblesville, has manufacturing in Vineuil, France; Oldbury, England; Shanghai; Aguirre, Puerto Rico; and Mexico City.
