Haidlmair GmbH, the toolmaker in Nussbach, Austria, introduced a long, slender gate for injection molds — instead of the traditional round gate — that reduces the shear at the gate for an improved distribution of material.
Haidlmair calls it the FDU — for flat die unit. FDUs were running at the K 2016 exhibits of three injection molding machinery companies: Milacron Holdings Corp., Wittmann Battenfeld GmbH and Stork IMM. Milacron's Mold-Masters hot runner business helped Haidlmair develop the FDU.
Willibald Windhager, head of advanced technologies at Haidlmair, said the FDU reduces shear up to 50 percent over conventional gate designs. One big benefit of lower shear, he said, is the ability to shorten cooling time — which reduces cycle times.
Haidlmair North America is in Concord, Ontario.
