K 2016 marked the world debut of laser-based infrared welding, from Bielomatik Leuze GmbH + Co. KG.
The company in Neuffen, Germany, said laser-based infrared welding is totally particle free and gives high weld strength, even with challenging structures such as assembly and inserted components, or component geometries that were unachievable with laser welding.
Applications are in the automotive industry, appliance, sanitary, electrical and electronics, medical and pharmaceutical.
The new technology combines the advantages of the well-known two-step infrared welding process with the quasi-simultaneous laser-based welding. Inside the separate periods of heating and joining, the surfaces are heated flexibly with high scanning speed before they are pressure-welded.
According to Bielomatik, for users, laser transparent plastics ceases to be an issue, as well as special component design for laser penetration welding and different absorption properties of plastics. Component alterations and tolerances are easily adjustable.
