Polystyrene resin production at materials maker Americas Styrenics LLC won't be affected by the firm's need to extend a production outage for styrene monomer feedstock.
Officials with AmSty in The Woodlands, Texas, said in a Feb. 16 news release that the firm now expects a styrene outage at its St. James, La., facility to extend into the second quarter. The extension is needed “to complete repairs on critical equipment,” they added.
“We are working to bring full styrene production back on line as safely and quickly as possible,” President and CEO Bradley Crocker said in the release. “In the meantime, this affects about half of our styrene production.”
“We are currently working with our styrene customers to assure adequate supply,” he added. “At this point we do not expect significant effect to our downstream polystyrene production.”
AmSty is one of North America's largest PS makers, operating plants in Gales Ferry, Conn.; Channahon, Ill.; Torrance, Calif.; and Ironton and Marietta, Ohio. The firm also operates a PS plant in Cartagena, Colombia.
AmSty is a joint venture between materials firms ChevronPhillips Chemical Co. and Trinseo.
