Control Micro Systems of Winter Park, Fla., has made advances in welding transparent plastics for the medical industry.
CMS makes laser machine tools for marking, engraving cutting, drilling and welding applications. Since 1983, the company has provided turnkey systems to customers in markets including medical devices, electronic, semiconductors, commercial products, automotive and aerospace.
Clear parts are key for the medical industry when the end user needs to view the content of the products. Devices such as microfluidic components and bio scrub brushes are assembled from molded transparent parts.
According to Control Micro Systems, laser welding is replacing ultrasonic welding in many applications.
“New, longer wavelength lasers eliminate the need for an absorbing layer, additive or opaque polymer to absorb the laser light and generate the necessary heat to join clear materials,” the company said in promotional materials.
The process can precisely weld multiple layers without flash or debris.
