Dr. Boy GmbH & Co. KG, the injection molding machinery maker in Fernthal, Germany, has received a German patent for a plasticizing unit of an injection molding machine for micromolding — featuring a screw diameter of just 8 millimeters.
Boy showed the technology at the Fakuma 2015 trade show. The company claimed it was the smallest screw piston plasticizing unit.
The unit has a significantly shorter dwell time in of the melt in the screw channel, without the need for pre-plasticizing, Boy said. Also, with a tiny pitch volume, the Boy XS offers with this plasticizing unit a major advantage when processing thermally sensitive materials, according to the company.
The short dwell times and a more-gentle material processing is based on first-in, first-out. Applications include medical, automotive, electronics, optics and microfluidics.
Boy's U.S. facility is in Exton, Pa.
