New Delhi — Omya India Private Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Switzerland-based Omya International AG, a producer of industrial minerals, is expanding its two sites in India.
"We are expanding on the western side of India in two sites of Surat and Taloja," said Marco Viel, vice president of packaging at Omya International, at the recent International Summit for Packaging Industry in New Delhi.
Omya manufacturing fillers and pigments from calcium carbonate and dolomite for the plastics, paper, paint and construction industries, among others. It has four plants in India.
"The four plants are catering primarily to the domestic Indian market with exports to adjoining countries also," he said. "India is a huge market and millions of tons of fillers and pigments are consumed by the plastics and packaging industry."
Mumbai-based Omya declined to share capacity and investment details at the ongoing expansion.
Currently, Omya is promoting mineral additives for polymer and fiber based packaging materials to boost sustainability, functionality and cost efficiency, he said.
"It will lower polymer content and carbon footprints at the same time enhancing barrier and mechanical properties," Viel said.
