A PET recycling business in southern Mexico was shut down in early January because it was operating illegally, a local government official says.
"It was a clandestine operation," the official in Izucar de Matamoros, 106 miles southeast of Mexico City, told Plastics News by telephone Jan. 5.
Declining to give his name, he said the business was run out of a private house in the municipality, which has a population of about 80,000.
According to other reports, neighbors had complained that the enterprise was a health risk. Apart from two fires in recent months, rats had been spotted at the property, the reports said.
Izucar de Matamoros is 42 miles southwest of Puebla, a major industrial center.
