Somonauk, Ill. — Imperial Marble Corp., a manufacturer of polymer cast surfaces for kitchens and bathrooms, permanently laid off 79 employees after losing a major contract.
The layoffs happened abruptly at the Somonauk-based company, which sells cultured marble and molded solid surfaces for residential and commercial uses. The company website says Imperial opened more than 35 years ago and has a client list that includes building suppliers Menards, Ace Hardware and True Value as well as hotels and motels Marriott, Best Western, Holiday Inn and Super 8.
A company official declined immediate comment about the layoffs, which happened Feb. 13-14 as the result of a “lost contract,” according to a monthly listing released by Illinois as part of the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act.
The state was notified about the job losses on Feb. 23. The employees were not in a union and have no bumping rights.
