More than two dozen investment groups are forming the Plastic Solutions Investor Alliance, an effort aimed squarely at plastic pollution.
The alliance, organized by Oakland-based environmental group As You Sow, wants to initially influence companies using plastic packaging in a variety of ways, including the development of alternatives.
"While plastic has many beneficial uses, its production has grown exponentially for many years without sufficient regard to its environmental impacts," the alliance states.
Other alliance goals include having companies disclose annual plastic packaging use, the establishment of plastic use reduction goals and the support of extended producer responsibility. EPR is an approach where the producer of a material or product is ultimately responsible for it after use.
The alliance said it will engage publicly traded companies to discuss plastic pollution, which it said is "a clear corporate brand risk."
