Plastic welding equipment maker Bielomatik Inc., of New Hudson, Mich., debuted the Turn2Weld two-step laser welding method at NPE2018, showing its first production machines.
The two-step welding process combines the advantages of infrared welding with laser-based welding. Separate periods of heating and joining give flexibility in the welding process, the company said. The mating surfaces are heated with high scanning-speed lasers before they are joined under constant pressure.
Turn2Weld is particle-free and gives high welding strength, even with challenging structures such as difficult geometries or components with inserts, according to Bielomatik.
