Tekni-Plex Inc. has acquired flexible packaging producer Beyers Plastics NV, which is based in Puurs, Belgium, from the investment firm Famo NV.
Beyers extrudes and converts polyethylene film in a Class 7 clean room for a variety of industries, including pharmaceutical, medical, food, aerospace, solar energy, semiconductor and chemicals.
Wayne, Pa.-based Tekni-Plex sees the acquisition — its 10th in four years — as a way to expand its portfolio of clean-room produced flexible packaging for pharmaceutical and medical products. The business will join its Tekni-Films business unit.
"For the first time, we will have bag converting capability, as well as PE blown film extrusion," Joe Horn, global senior vice president and general manager of Tekni-Films, said in a news release. "The acquisition supports our goal of expanding our offerings in the pharmaceutical and health care space."
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Tekni-Plex also makes medical compounds and tubing.
Beyers Plastics says it counts most of the Top 10 pharmaceutical companies as customers for its bags, which keep medical supplies clean and safe from contamination.
Tekni-Plex also has well-known customers in the pharmaceutical and medical markets, which it serves from production sites in eight countries. The company has estimated global sales of about $800 million.
The acquirer's presence in the U.S., Europe, Asia and Central America should benefit Beyers Plastics, according to Beyers General Manager Johan Noelmans.
"Our combined expertise and manufacturing capability will provide packaging solutions for more companies, as well as grow sales for our combined product lines," Noelmans said in the release.
Founded in 1970, Beyers' bags and sheet are double- or triple-packed for use in customers' clean rooms. They are individually labeled for traceability throughout the supply chain. The company also is capable of printing in the clean room with isopropanol-resistant ink to conform with European Union regulations, and it supplies certified sterilized products.
Tekni-Plex says the acquisition supports its plan to grow by acquiring innovative plastic and rubber companies. Other transactions completed in 2018 include Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Oracle Packaging, which makes health care packaging, performance lidstock, induction seal and specialty laminations; Bloomfield, N.Y.-based Commodore Plastics and its sister company Commodore Technology, which make polystyrene foam trays and became part of Tekni-Plex's Dolco Packaging LLC unit; and Manchester, N.H.-based Dunn Industries Inc., which makes specialty medical tubing.
In October 2017, Tekni-Plex was acquired by the private equity firm Genstar Capital. In addition to the United States, the company has locations in Belgium, China, Costa Rica, Germany, India, Italy and Northern Ireland.
