In Brazil, a team of students at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, campus of Duque de Caxias (UFRJ/DC), have formed a start-up in which they have developed a new bioplastic packaging called Plasticor, which can indicate food deterioration by changing color.
The idea behind the packaging was to come up with a solution to the twin problems of food waste and the use of fossil resources for producing plastic. Plasticor packaging incorporates a biosensor, which can sense the quality of food and indicate whether or not it is fit for consumption. This will help prevent consumers from throwing out perfectly good food simply because the expiration date has passed.
