Komax Systems Inc. designed the Komax Hi-Pass sludge mixer to achieve polymer savings of more than 25 percent by mixing polymer solutions into sludge flows before the dewatering process.
Konax, of Huntington Beach, Calif., said the static mixer is designed to be extremely resistant to fouling or clogging. The edges of the element sets are contoured with a large radius, or high-fouling duty.
The basis for the mixer design is a set of right rotation elements, followed by a set of left rotational elements set at 90 degrees from each other. That is a non-clogging design, as the municipal sludges contain solid and fibrous materials of enough quantities and types to accumulate and cause fouling or plugging conditions in standard mixers, according to Komax.
The injector manifold is designed to present the diluted polymer solution to the sludge flow for optimum efficiency, giving better dispersion of the small amount of solution through the sludge mixing elements.
