Consumer goods giant Procter & Gamble Co. has announced plans to reduce plastic packaging across its fabric care brands in Europe by 30 percent by 2025.
Speaking at the Sustainable Brands Conference in Paris April 24, Virginie Helias, chief sustainability officer at P&G, said the planned reductions could add up to more than 15,000 metric tons per year of plastics compared to the 2018 baseline.
To reduce plastic packaging, the company said its Ariel pods round tubs will move to bags, saving 75 percent of packaging per wash.
P&G's main fabric care brands in Europe include Ariel and Lenor. The company did not further elaborate on actions planned for other fabric care brands.
The move by P&G is part of its Ariel 2030 brand ambition which envisions reducing resources by 2030, including its use of virgin plastics.
In addition, the fabric care business unit also announced that it is aiming for "full recyclability" by 2022 across all packaging.
The unit has also increased its use of post-consumer plastics, using up to 50 percent recycled materials in its packaging.
