With a nod to Marvel Comics, materials firm Covestro LLC has found its own Fantastic Four.
Four sites operated by Covestro in the U.S. now are running entirely on renewable electricity, officials said in a news release: Channelview, Texas; South Deerfield, Mass.; New Martinsville, W. Va. and the firm’s regional headquarters in Pittsburgh.
Those sites have reached net-zero Scope 2 electricity emissions through use of Renewable Energy Certificates. Officials said this achievement is a result of Covestro's virtual Power Purchase Agreement with Danish firm Orsted, a renewable energy leader in the U.S. market.
"Even in a persistently challenging market environment, we are working towards our goal of climate-neutral production by 2035,” Chief Technology Officer Thorsten Dreier said. "By leveraging renewable energy, we're not just reducing our carbon footprint — we're actively shaping a brighter future for our industry.”
The agreement with Orsted provides Covestro with 90 megawatts of renewable energy capacity. It will reduce approximately 90,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually. Officials said this represents “a significant step” towards Covestro's goal of climate neutral production by 2035.
Covestro LLC Chairman and President Samir Hifri said the partnership with Orsted “is a prime example of how collaboration and innovation can drive meaningful change in our industry."
Covestro LLC is a unit of Covestro AG of Leverkusen, Germany. The firm is a global supplier of polycarbonate resins and films, thermoplastic polyurethane, PU materials and foams and other specialty chemicals and materials. Covestro employs around 17,500 worldwide and posted sales of $14.9 billion in 2023.
