New Jersey lawmakers are moving ahead with a plan to have larger restaurants and schools replace single-use plastic utensils with reusables.
But the plan is getting pushback from schools, which question the cost and at times safety of using metal utensils, and business groups, which said it was impractical for restaurants without the washing capacity.
The public television affiliated news site NJ Spotlight News had a detailed, four-minute report on the plan, which supporters say would help to normalize less wasteful behavior, similar to encouraging people to bring reusable water bottles.
A recent state Senate hearing on the bill, which saw lawmakers vote 3-2 to send the plan forward, included testimony on plastics health concerns from researchers at Rutgers University.
