Today could mark the start of a future in plastics for high school students near Freeport, Texas, as members of the Brazoria County Petrochemical Council — made up of plastics heavy hitters such as BASF, Braskem, Chevron Phillips, DSM and Dow — are set to conduct 700 interviews with high school seniors.
The BCPC Workforce Development Committee's Career Signing Day has launched 150 high school graduates into new careers since beginning the collaborative event for companies and schools.
During today's round, students interview with up to four companies during a four-hour period. On April 23, the companies will offer students post-graduation jobs, the group notes on its website. In 2023, BCPC members offered a record 79 jobs on signing day.
BCPC said its members have a combined 9,500 full-time direct employees and 6,800 full-time contractors.
"By investing in the training and placement of new workers [the organization] hopes to stabilize labor costs and, as a result, maintain competitive pricing for both chemical products and the downstream industries they supply," it said.
