They're freezing out plastics in favor of paper packaging for McDonald's McFlurry ice cream treats.
The global fast-food chain dropped its plastic McFlurry spoon and straw combination in 2023 and now says it will phase out plastic containers in favor of a paper version at all of its locations by 2025.
The paper packaging has a foldable four-flap top that will not require a separate lid.
"Packaging updates like this matter," said Michael Gonda, senior vice president and chief impact officer of North America for McDonald's. "Not only is this a fun new way for our U.S. fans to enjoy the McFlurry, we're also moving one step closer to fulfilling our packaging and waste commitments."
Paper packaging for the McFlurry already is in use in Canada and Indonesia.
