The debate over banning detergent pods has washed up in New York City with a member of the city council introducing legislation Feb. 8 to ban them.
Democrat James Gennaro wants to limit sales of pods and laundry sheets made from polyvinyl alcohol, arguing they can introduce microplastics into the environment.
But the American Cleaning Institute, which represents cleaning product makers, pointed to an Environmental Protection Agency review last year that did not find problems despite a push by a coalition of environmental groups and the cleaning products maker Blueland, which makes laundry tablets that don't use PVA film, to remove pods from an EPA list of ingredients in its "Safer Choice" product listing.
