The record-breaking snow and cold that hit the U.S. Gulf Coast Jan. 21-22 closed some plants, forced police to shut down stretches of highway and cut airport travel.
It also led to creativity for residents who rarely — if ever — see snow in their communities but wanted to try out sledding.
As 8 inches of snow fell in New Orleans, residents turned levee banks into sledding hills using whatever was available. One Louisiana television reporter used a plastic kayak as his sled. Students at Tulane University grabbed boxes, paddleboards and plastic bins. Inflatable pool toys were blown up for the occasion and plopped onto hills.
On Reddit, commenters were pretty sure that the "most New Orleans" item for sledding was either a King Cake box or a plastic crawfish boil tray.
"I have yet to see one real sled," WWL TV reporter Amelia Strayan said during her report. "Most of them are using boogie boards, I think. I've seen a few Tupperware container lids. People are getting creative."
