Diplomats at the global plastics treaty talks in Ottawa, Ontario, made some progress last month, although there are still lots of issues left to resolve.
There was a move toward compromise at the latest United Nations plastics treaty talks. Steve Toloken, who has covered the last three rounds of talks for Plastics News, talked about both the progress and the issues in PN’s May Plastics in Politics editorial livestream. Recording below.
“There was a decent amount of progress. It’s kind of like the backs were up against the wall after the second and the third sessions, where there had been a lot of disagreements between countries about how to proceed with the treaty,” Toloken said.
Diplomats wanted to make progress in part because of elections happening around the world in the next several months. Also, there’s a growing awareness that reaching an agreement later this year will be just the beginning of a long process that will strengthen the deal over time.
