Lately Plastics News has been printing many articles about pollution caused by dumped plastics and how the plastics industry is responsible for cleaning up the pollution.
Then I read: Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse is pushing for a 20-cent tax on virgin resin to "hold the plastics industry accountable." ("Senator proposes 20-cent virgin plastic tax," Aug. 16, Page 1.)
I wonder, why is the paper industry not held accountable for the dumping and pollution from packaging and wrappers that are single use? Why has no one demanded that the fast-food industry be accountable for all of the plastic and paper that is dumped in parking lots, beaches, parks and the side of the roads?
People don't have a plastics problem. Plastics has a people problem. People pollute.
