Formosa Plastics Corp. USA has declared force majeure on some grades of high density polyethylene resins made at a plant in Point Comfort, Texas.
In a Feb. 22 letter to customers, officials with Formosa in Livingston, N.J., said that the firm "has experienced unexpected mechanical issues" at its high molecular weight (HMW) bimodal HDPE plant in Point Comfort.
"As a result of this production outage … Formosa is declaring [force majeure] on its Formolene PE HMW bimodal film and pressure pipe products, effective Feb. 22," they said.
"We are currently evaluating the impact of this event on our production capability and will provide additional information once we have assessed our ability to supply. ... Formosa is making every effort to return back to normal production as quickly as possible."
Formosa is a major supplier of PE, PVC and polypropylene resins. The firm is a unit of Formosa Group of Taiwan.
