Tempe, Ariz.-based Molded Devices Inc. has acquired two medical tubing extrusion companies from Germany's Schauenburg Technology SE.
The deal is MDI's first since it was sold to private equity firm TruArc Partners LP in August.
MDI announced Nov. 9 that it had purchased GlobalMed Inc. and Schauenburg-Truplast. Terms were not disclosed.
"The addition of GlobalMed will grow the MDI footprint and increase our extrusion capabilities to include corrugated tube extrusion," Gregg Tobin, CEO and president of MDI, told Plastics News in an emailed statement.
"The addition of GlobalMed will further our goal of being OEM's single point of contact for all their plastic and rubber needs," Tobin said.
GlobalMed's current management team in Canada and China will join MDI's leadership team, the statement said.
"GlobalMed has experienced an attractive growth trajectory over the past 20 years, becoming a globally recognized player in the medical OEM sector," Marc Georg Schauenburg, CEO of Mülheim, Germany-based Schauenburg Technology, said in a Nov. 9 news release.
Tobin added: "Our current expertise in various molding technologies combined with GlobalMed's extrusion expertise in the design, development, and production of highly engineered extrusions for specialized medical applications and devices will allow us to provide an expanded set of injection molding, extrusion, design, development, and assembly capabilities," he added.
Trenton, Ontario-based GlobalMed extrudes tubing for medical device OEMs in the areas of anesthesia, respiratory, ventilation and sleep apnea. GlobalMed has been part of Schauenburg Hose Technology Group since 2004.
Schauenburg‐Truplast Hose Technology Ltd. is a medical tubing extruder and contract manufacturer in China. It was established in 2005.
MDI dates to 1963 and has made numerous acquisitions, many focused on health care and specialty plastics manufacturing. Prior to the GlobalMed/Schauenburg deal, the most recent was the November 2021 purchase of injection molder Seitz LLC.
Including the newly acquired tubing extrusion operations, MDI now has 16 locations globally, including the United States, Canada, Mexico and China. Its manufacturing capabilities include injection molding, tube extrusion, blow molding, dip molding and dip coating.
