ASTM International is moving ahead with standards for additive manufacturing.
ASTM’s F42 committee on additive manufacturing technologies is developing a standard-guide for mechanical testing of plastics used in AM. The guide aims to incorporate what has been learned about mechanical testing modification, interpreting results and validating test methods.
The standard is a project of ASTM’s Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence, led by Wichita State University’s National Institute for Aviation Research.
The new guide will be useful for machine operators, 3D printer manufacturers, material suppliers, testing laboratories, technology adopters, type-certified holders and certificate regulators, according to ASTM of West Conshohocken, Pa.
