For the first time, several prototypes of an Organosandwich component was displayed at K 2019, at the booth of EconCore NV, the maker of honeycomb production systems in Leuven, Belgium.
EconCore focused on the production of Organosandwich semi-finished products consisting of a polypropylene honeycomb core and two glass fiber PP cross-ply skin layers. The honeycomb core and the application of the skin layer are produced in a continuous process at ThermHex Waben GmbH, a subsidiary of EconCore.
The automotive industry is a target market.
During the first production step of the ThermHex technology, thermoplastic polymers are extruded into a film, vacuum formed and folded into a honeycomb core. In the second step, skins are laminated onto the honeycomb, directly after the core is made.
K 2019 was the second K show for EconCore. "Our aim is to continuously improve upon the technology to further develop the process and open new application possibilities," said Tomasz Czarnecki, chief operating officer at EconCore.
EconCore is working with Meaf Machines BV for a trail production of recycled PET ThermHex honeycomb sandwich panels.Meaf displayed the new extrusion technology on its K show stand.
