Riverdale Global LLC of Aston, Pa., has introduced a new additive intended to reduce polymer degradation, called +Restore.
The additive reduces material breakdown during melt processing, substantially increasing physical property retention in regrind as compared to an unmodified material.
Jared Arbeter, technical sales manager at Riverdale, says that the additive has exhibited positive results with recycled commodity resins, such as polyolefins. For example, reground homopolymer polypropylene containing +Restore exhibited 65 percent Izod impact strength than unmodified regrind. Improvements have also been achieved with PP copolymer and HDPE, he said.
The new additive can be used alone or in a blend. Typical usage rates are in the 0.1 to 0.5 percent range. +Restore can be used with virgin material, but the greatest benefit comes when used with recycled polymer, according to Riverdale.
