New York-based Abundia Global Impact Group has entered into definitive agreements to acquire land for its first chemical recycling plant. The site is located within Cedar Port Industrial Park, in the Baytown area of Houston.
Abundia converts waste plastics into fuels and chemicals, as well as biomass into biofuels. The Texas site will use Alterra’s liquefaction technology, which Abundia has a license to operate since 2021, to produce pyrolysis oil.
The chemical recycler envisions the Texas site as its U.S. hub for recycling, renewable and circular technologies, as well as a center for co-location with complementary technology development.
It did not disclose what the planned capacity of the plant is, nor when it is expected to start operations.
When Abundia and Alterra first signed a technology licensing agreement, Abundia announced plans to build its first plant in the United Kingdom. The facility was expected to process up to 40,000 metric tons of plastic waste per year and to start operations in 2022. There have been no updates on the project since.
Abundia’s CEO Ed Gillespie said in a statement that development of the Texas site is expected to start in 2025.
“Cedar Port Industrial Park is a world class enterprise capable of providing Abundia with an ideal location with use of established distribution channels via its rail, shipping and road networks. This accessibility made the site a standout for Abundia’s first recycling and renewable hub”, Gillespie explained. “We are excited to begin development in 2025, with plans to rapidly expand alongside Alterra to other locations across the U.S. and Europe.”
