Allegheny Performance Plastics LLC is adding equipment and a clean room to do medical molding, and plans to eventually add a second facility focused on health care.
The Cranberry Township, Pa.-based injection molder currently focuses on the automotive and aerospace industries.
Allegheny has been injection molding for more than 85 years and is known for its expertise in high-performance polycarbonates, polyetheretherketone and polyphenylsulfone.
CEO Rob Stutzman said that expertise is a natural fit for the health care market.
"The skills that we've developed in product development in other industries" blend well into the medical market, Stutzman said in an interview with Plastics News.
Allegheny is adding a clean room and white room space, and plans to add a dedicated automated work cell within the year.
"Right now, we've got two pieces of equipment that are purchased that will go in there, and some automation as well," Stutzman said.
"We will only expand to a certain point, as part of our plans are to have a second facility in the future that will probably be built around health care."
The company has already taken on two production projects and plans to find more opportunities within the drug delivery, cancer treatment and surgical areas.
The plan to expand into a second facility is still in the works, as Allegheny is unsure of location or time line for the new facility.
Two Cleveland-area investment firms led a management buyout of Allegheny Performance Plastics in 2016.
At the time, the private firms — JWI Capital LLC of Twinsburg, Ohio, and Squire Ridge Co. LLC of Beachwood, Ohio — said they planned to actively seek add-on acquisitions, broaden its manufacturing capabilities and penetrate new markets.
