In a move that will create Europe’s first packaging supplier for all markets and substrates, Chicago-based Berlin Packaging will buy Dutch rigid packaging major Novio Packaging Group BV.
Founded in 1978 in Wijchen, Netherlands, Novio supplies primary packaging and packaging solutions for a variety of markets such as pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, food and domestic non-food industries.
With several offices across northern Europe, Novio has recently gone through a growth phase, completing four acquisitions in the past two years. Novio supplies PET and high density polyethylene packaging along with glass containers.
The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions and is expected to be completed in the next 45 days, Berlin Packaging said in an Oct. 29 statement. Financial details were not disclosed.
Berlin Packaging is a $2.6 billion global supplier of rigid packaging products and services to customers of all types across all sectors. The company sells plastic, glass and metal containers and closures.
The Novio purchase marks the company’s fifth European acquisition in 2019, and 13th since 2010. The company said the move will ignificantly strengthen Berlin Packaging’s European plastic offering while expanding its northern European footprint.
Berlin Packaging’s European companies are comprised of Italian speciality glass market leader Bruni Glass, closure experts Bruni Erben, as well as four other companies acquired in 2019.
The addition of Novio Packaging to the existing European portfolio, creates “a unique packaging supplier for glass, plastic and metal containers and closures” with a workforce of over 1,300 across 130 locations in North America, and operations in nine European countries, China, and South Africa.
“Acquiring Novio fully solidifies our European positioning, giving us the ability to help customers of all sizes, including multi-national corporations, across all market segments, grow their bottom lines with our packaging products and services,” Berlin CEO and Chairman Andrew Berlin said.
The takeover, he went on to say, offers cross-selling opportunities, a robust sales pipeline, and a platform for continued European expansion. After the acquisition, all of Novio Packaging’s employees, including founders and co-managing directors Erik Trum and Marck Jansen, will be retained.
