Albion, Mich.-based Team 1 Plastics, founded in 1987 and still owned by two of its three original owners, said it strives to create an "open, laid-back, team-oriented culture where team members can succeed."
Family is a big focus at Team 1. The injection molder offers a "loose attendance policy" that allows for flexible time and opportunities for employees to miss work for personal situations. Dogs are also allowed at work.
When a Team 1 worker has a baby, the company sends them a customized blanket for the newborn. Team 1 throws two holiday parties each year, and all employees' families are invited.
In 2019, the company held a weight-loss challenge. The top three winners — or "losers" — received gift cards and the grand prizewinner received a one-year membership to a local gym.
The company said that while it might be located in a small community, it is a big contributor.
"We always try to participate in community events like the parades and sending a team to a local elementary school to pass out candy while dressed up. We partner with a local high school to offer employment opportunities to students and have several success stories," Team 1 said in its Best Places to Work survey.
The company has given to organizations such as Junior Achievement, and its human resources manager volunteers to teach third-grade students about business and money.
"Our culture is the foundation of what makes up a great place to work, but we are constantly trying new things to remain a best place to work," Team 1 said.
There are 58 employees at the company. Team 1 made the Best Places to Work lists in 2019, 2018, 2016, 2015 and 2014.
