Employees at Northbrook, Ill.-based M. Holland Co. are "at the heart of everything we do," according to its Best Places to Work questionnaire, so much that they're called "Mployees."
The resin distributor has its own awards for Mployees. On-the-Spot Awards are gift cards that managers hand to employees as instant recognition for demonstrating extra effort at work. High-Five Awards are peer recognition where employees can submit a "high-five" that is displayed on the company intranet and office monitors to recognize hard workers.
M. Holland's annual Mpact Awards acknowledge accomplishments across the company during a formal banquet ceremony. The highest sales performers celebrate during an incentive trip.
Mployees and spouses are flown in for the all-company holiday party. There's a casino theme with live music and raffle prizes that include jewelry, televisions and other electronics. The company also hosts an annual summer picnic and Take Your Child to Work Day for families.
Employees can take advantage of the company's skybox at United Center in Chicago with free sporting event tickets and discounted concert tickets.
In-office festivities include monthly birthday cakes, new-hire breakfasts and contests such as chili cook-offs and steps challenges. The kitchen is stocked with snacks, and casual days are reserved for Fridays and specific occasions like sports opening days.
The company offers 100 percent paid maternity leave for eight weeks, paternity leave for two weeks and grandparent leave for one week. M. Holland pays 100 percent of premiums for life insurance for Mployees at three times their salary as well as spousal insurance for $100,000.
The high-deductible plan is 90 percent paid for employees for all coverage levels, and the company contributes between $500-$1,000 into a health savings account. Mployees are given 20 days of paid time off after one year with the company.
M. Holland CEO and President Ed Holland, who has been with the company for 43 years, hosts quarterly employee meetings.

M. Holland was named a Best Place to Work in 2019 (No. 3) and 2018 (No. 4).
