Family-owned Specialty Manufacturing Inc. of Saginaw, Mich., celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2019.
At SMI, 60 percent of the staff is female and 40 percent is male. The company pays 100 percent of medical premiums for both full-time and part-time employees and their dependents. Employees are eligible to enroll in the health care plan the first day of the next month after hire.
SMI said it offers "competitive wages and benefits with the option to work overtime," "a strong team atmosphere, from cross-training employees across processes and products to bringing the team together once a week for an all-team meeting" and 10 paid holidays with the week between Christmas and New Year's Day closed with pay.
"Not only do we have three generations of our family actively involved in the business, but we also work hard to treat all of our employees like family. … Nearly half of our workforce has been with us for 10 or more years, including several who joined us right out of high school and who have grown throughout their careers at SMI," the company stated in its Best Places to Work survey.
The contract manufacturer specializes in custom-engineered silicone products.
"Even with the global silicone shortage we experienced in 2018-19, our employees still had opportunities to work their full shifts and overtime if they desired, and our engineering team was able to explore creative solutions to our company and our customers," the company said.
SMI also hosts interactive meetings and provides snacks for those who attend. The organization also gives employees branded apparel to show company pride.
