After a short break, U.S. polypropylene resin makers will be affected once again by antidumping duties when selling into Brazil.
On Feb. 8, the Executive Management Committee of Brazil's Foreign Trade Chamber voted to reinstate the duties, according to a recent report from research and data firm ICIS of Houston. Previous duties had expired.
The U.S. accounted for only 5 percent of Brazil's total PP imports in 2023. But strong lobbying from Brazilian domestic producers, who face competition from lower-priced overseas material, prompted the committee to reinstate the duties, according to the report.
The duties will add 10.6 percent to import prices and will take effect as soon as published in Brazil's official gazette. In 2023, Brazil imported more than 1.1 billion tons of PP, with less than 60 million pounds coming from the U.S.
