A Chicago plastic bag and pouch maker is shutting down in a move that will impact 75 workers.
BioStar Films LLC has signaled the operation will permanently close Jan. 17, according to the Illinois workNet, a workforce development program.
BioStar is owned by the Sigma Plastics Group, and is located 4848 S. Hoyne Ave., Chicago. Sigma also owns Aargus Plastics Inc. and Bio Industries, two other bag making companies that are in nearby Wheeling, Ill. That location has more than 200,000 square feet of manufacturing and warehouse space.
The company filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, or WARN, notice with the state outlining the closure. A representative of Bio Star who is listed as a contact on the WARN notice for BioStar did not return a call seeking comment.
Sigma is listed as the fourth-largest film and sheet maker in North America in the latest Plastics News listing, with 42 plants and estimated sales of $2.5 billion.
