Danish plastics extrusion firm Primo A/S is opening its first U.S. plant in Mobile, Ala.
The new 24,000-square-foot plant primarily will make PVC profiles for subsea cables, officials said in a news release. The site also will make profiles based on polyethylene and polypropylene.
Officials said the decision was made "after years of thorough research and market analysis" and that the new plant "marks a significant milestone" in Primo's global expansion.
The plant is colocated with subsea cable maker SLB OneSubsea, which invested in the expansion as part of a strategic partnership with Primo. The initial phase of the expansion includes five production lines.
The first extruded plastic profile deliveries from the new lines are set to begin in the next few weeks, officials said. Full operations at the site are expected by the end of the year.
The plant will create 12 new jobs. A grand opening event is set for April 3.
"By establishing our plastic extrusion facility in Mobile, we are not only strengthening our collaboration with SLB OneSubsea, but also contributing to the region's thriving industrial sector," Primo CEO Claus Tonnesen said.
"We look forward to growing our presence here and fostering innovation in the energy and offshore industry," he added.
Primo is based in Copenhagen and operates 12 sales and production sites in Europe, China and the U.S. The firm was founded in 1959 by the Grunnet family and specializes in custom-designed plastic profile solutions.
Primo employs about 1,000 worldwide and posted sales of about $195 million in 2024.
