Special-Lite Inc., a maker of commercial fiberglass and aluminum doors and entrances based in Decatur, Mich., plans to build a new facility to expand production capacity.
The company expects to invest $15.6 million for the 59,000-square-foot facility and projects it could create 55 new jobs over the next five years.
Special-Lite currently employs 184 people in Decatur and 874 people at a facility in Benton Harbor, Mich., producing commercial fiberglass and aluminum entrances, interior aluminum framing with swing or sliding doors, and polymer bathroom partitions.
The Michigan Strategic Fund supported the expansion with a $250,000 performance-based Michigan Business Development Program grant. The Village of Decatur may also approve a property tax abatement for the company valued at more than $1.5 million.
Special-Lite considered sites in Indiana that would have required a smaller capital investment than building in Decatur, according to an announcement from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's office. Lacking state support, "the company would have relocated to Indiana resulting in a net loss of good-paying jobs in Michigan," according to a statement.
"With the support of the [state] we will enhance our commitment to manufacturing high-quality products while strengthening and contributing to the local economy," Special-Lite President and Chief Operating Officer Alex Esposito said in a statement. "This investment opens additional markets, supports new growth and enhances our presence as a premium employer in Southwest Michigan."
