Tarragona, Spain-based Elix Polymers is providing a chemically recycled acrylonitrile butadiene styrene resin for BSH Home Appliances Corp. in a Bosch stand mixer.
The material, ABS P3H-AT CR25, is 25 percent bio-circular styrene, and its carbon footprint is reduced by 21 percent compared to traditional raw material.
The material is used in the stand, arm and other components of the stand mixer. It is impact and chemical resistant and contains an anti-static additive, and it also has a "high-gloss" finish.
Elix partnered with BSH to develop the material for the product, it said.
The ABS supplier's portfolio is getting bigger, Fabian Herter, marketing manager at Elix told Plastics News at NPE2024.
Although its life cycle assessments and specialized materials are "not for everybody," Herter said, ABS has remained stable through a rocky global market.
The second half of 2023 showed weak demand for consumer goods, but the first half of 2024 is "looking up" for Elix, he said. "A lot of people bought [appliances] during the pandemic."
For Elix, the European demand has been "better than expected," and its Asian market "is quite stable" despite new, competing ABS capacity in the region, Herter added.
At NPE, Elix hopes to find new opportunities and leads in the U.S. market, he added.
Elix's E-LOOP CR products are manufactured using raw materials incorporated with circular and bio-based feedstocks. The products are certified by ISCC+ and Elix uses a mass balance model to ensure traceability and transparency throughout the supply chain.
