Ansonia, Conn.-based Farrel Pomini (W5161) will debut a solution for mechanical and chemical recycling applications, featuring the versatility and flexibility of its continuous mixer.
First introduced in 1963, the Farrel continuous mixer features two counter-rotating, nonintermeshing rotors and a large-volume mixing chamber.
For mechanical recycling, irregularly shaped material is fed from a large hopper with crammer options for low bulk density feeding, proprietary hard surface coatings for maximum wear, and a patent-pending grooved mixer feed section and a vent capture system.
For the chemical recycling process, the continuous mixer is used in the primary stage of pyrolysis to heat and melt plastic or rubber. Farrel Pomini is a partner with WF Recycle Tech in the United Kingdom, which has a patented pyrolysis system for recycling end-of-life tires.
At NPE, Farrel Pomini will demonstrate expertise in biodegradable plastics and recycled compounding. The company said the continuous mixer's low process temperature, short residence time and efficient rotor shear make it ideal for processing temperature-sensitive or prior-heat history applications. The processing of PLA, PHA, PBS, and recycled PVC and film scrap will be featured.
At 1 p.m. May 9 on the NPE2024 Sustainability Stage, Peng Ye, applications development manager for Farrel Pomini, will give a presentation called "Novel Biocomposites Produced by the Continuous Compounding Process." The talk will highlight the development work among the partnership of Farrel Pomini and FPInnovations, West Fraser and Good Natured Products. The collaboration was formed to develop innovative bio-based and compostable compounds, combining wood-based material and biopolymers.
Another presentation will feature Farrel Pomini's role in a patented pyrolysis process for plastics developed by Lummus Technology. The process takes streams of different post-industrial and post-consumer waste to sort, shred, clean and prepare for a downstream conversion reactor for pyrolysis. The Farrel continuous mixer is used to melt the feedstock resins and homogenize it under specific temperature and pressure parameters.
The application creates a circular economy by delivering waste plastics from landfills and closes the loop on plastics production.
